Singapore’s retail calendar has three fixed points

Forget spring and autumn. Singapore stores plan window displays around three dates: Chinese New Year, National Day in August, and the stretch from Black Friday through Christmas to New Year. These three anchors decide when a display goes up, what it says, and how long it stays up.

Mark all three on your calendar before the year starts. Chinese New Year moves on the lunar calendar, so the date shifts by weeks each year. Check it in January, not in December for a display going up the same month.

The usual problem. The season sneaks up on you. CNY is two weeks out, the props are sold out, and the window still shows last year’s look. The display goes up late, comes down late, and the busiest weeks are half wasted.

Chinese New Year: late January to mid-February

Red and gold carry the whole window. Keep the palette to two or three colours so the display reads clearly from across the street.

Fashion retailers get the most out of this period by dressing mannequins in cheongsam, qipao, or festive red pieces, one strong outfit per figure rather than layering too much on. A single mannequin in a clean red outfit against a gold backdrop beats five figures crowded with props.

Order any props or backdrop material at least three weeks ahead. Suppliers get busy in the run-up to CNY and stock runs out fast.

National Day: early to mid-August

Red and white work here too, but the story is different from CNY: local pride, not celebration and family. Clean lines and simple shapes read better than clutter.

If you plan to use the national flag in the display, check the government’s flag display guidelines first. There are rules on how the flag can and cannot be shown, and it’s worth five minutes to get it right.

National Day displays tend to run shorter, about two weeks either side of the 9th. Budget your mannequin and prop time for a short sprint, not a long campaign.

Year-end: Black Friday through Christmas to New Year

This is the longest display window of the year, six to eight weeks from late November to early January. One static display won’t carry that long.

Split it into three beats: Black Friday and Cyber Monday (discount-led, bold signage), Christmas (party wear, coats, gifting), and New Year (fresh starts, lighter colours). Keep the same mannequin figures and structure, and swap the outfits and props between beats. This saves you building three separate displays from scratch.

Set the swap dates in your calendar now: Black Friday teardown in the first week of December, Christmas teardown by 27 or 28 December.

What makes a display work, in any season

Match the number of mannequins to your window size. A narrow window with four mannequins looks cramped and hides the clothes. Two or three figures, spaced out, read better from the street.

Light the display from an angle, not straight on. Straight-on lighting flattens the outfit. Angled light shows fabric texture and folds.

Check your mannequins under the display lighting before the season starts, not after the window is dressed. Chipped paint, dust, and worn joints all show up under a spotlight in a way they don’t under regular store lights.

Buy for reuse, not for one season

A mannequin that only works for one theme is a mannequin you store for eleven months. Abstract or headless mannequins carry outfits from CNY red to National Day white to Christmas party wear without needing a different figure each time, because the mannequin itself doesn’t carry a season.

Fibreglass mannequins are common in retail windows because they hold their shape and finish through repeated dressing and undressing, display after display, year after year. That matters most in a market with three major changeovers a year, not one.

Adjustable pose mannequins stretch further too. Change the arm or leg position between CNY and National Day and the same figure reads as a new display, no extra purchase needed.

Plan the year, not the display

Stores that get the most out of window displays don’t start planning the week before CNY. They map all three dates in January, decide which mannequins and props carry across all three, and buy once for the year instead of three separate times.
